I hate having to re-do skinning and I want full consistency between characters, so I like to be able to share their base skinning.Įdit: Ok I'm watching this this actually looks awesome now. If the polygons do happen to be in the same/similar place, it's perfect. #3 "Skin wrap" modifier which can replicate the skinning from one model to another which has totally different topology.

I'll create a walk cycle on one layer, add a new additive layer for holding one weapon, then another additive layer to modify that to be for another weapon, and essentially keep all my animations in one file, just stacked as layers so I can quickly enable/disable different animations for that character all from the same place. I don't think many people work this way but I really make use of the additive animation layers. No full commitment, and you can inject changes at any 'level' of the stack EG I can add a chamfer modifier to see how that looks, but still untick it and make some changes to the underlying model before re-enabling it. #1 Non-destructive / non-linear modelling. They could easily allow people to just download things no, what they like is control over us and luckily for them, that coincides a lot of the time with us being comfortable. Subscriptions are comfortable and that's what the consumer wants the fact that subscription services exclude any real way of owning or backing up your stuff is entirely on the consumer-unfriendly attitude of big media and big software. Meh, I don't believe half the shit business people spew and the "customer wants it this way" is part of that. I don't even really use it much but I love what it is, I think it's a great product and want it to succeed, but they're really missing the basics that keep people from giving it a chance.

Now, if you already have the other softwares is it really worth spending months learning Blender well, which means a drastic drop productivity and free time? Or are you going to stick with a program that follows industry standards? shift + space + g to move? Well, it kind of moves, but the time slider starts playing and I have no move tool, the object just kind of follows my mouse. The tool tips also show wildly inconsistent key mappings. Suddenly I'm left clicking and nothing is working (yes I know they changed it but bear with me), scale, rotate and move tools aren't how I expect them to be and the shortcut on the tool tips don't work. I can then hop over to Mari and navigate perfectly fine as well. I can move between Maya and Houdini with ease (since Houdini as of the past few releases has Maya controls). When it comes to modeling people want a package that is similar to everything else in their pipeline. Maya is usually the animation tool of choice, ZBrush for sculpting, Mari or Substance for texturing, Houdini for sims, etc.
